While Your Utility Bills Rise, Some Get Breaks

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Have you noticed your electric bill going higher and higher?

NBC 4 discovered some are getting special breaks on electricity.

The issue of special contracts and side deals between electric companies and big corporations has made it to the statehouse.

The issue? Utility companies are giving corporations and businesses a break in rate payments in the name of economic development, but homeowners have to foot bills facing rate hikes, NBC 4 reported.

These big corporations don't need the rate discount, according to the Ohio Consumers Council.

“We should not have struggling, hardworking families subsidizing large corporations unless there's a good reason for it,” said Janine Migden of Ostrander.

A public hearing on the issue will be held at the statehouse next week.
