If city officials get their way, you will pay 4.89 percent more on your water bill by next year.
COLUMBUS, Ohio—City residents soon could be paying more for water. The city of Columbus wants to increase water rates by almost 5 percent.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
If a new proposal were to pass, the average customer would pay approximately $40 more a year on his or her water bill with the proposed 4.89 percent increase.
Why is the increase necessary, though, since voters recently approved a half-percent income-tax hike?
There are federally mandated projects that cost millions, and the increased revenue would keep the projects running smoothly and the city’s water clean, according to Columbus’ Department of Public Utilities spokesperson George Zonders.
Specifically, projects include major upgrades to the Hap Cremean and Dublin Road water-treatment plants and technology upgrades to the Jackson Pike and Southerly wastewater treatment facilities.
NBC 4 asked how the city could justify a proposed water-rate increase weeks after a vote for an income-tax increase.
“Well, the income-tax increase and the rate increase for public utilities are two different things. We’re obviously not happy needing an increase. We have a lot of things we’re required to do, but the economy is bad. We know that,” Zonders said.
The city’s Sewer and Water Advisory Board was expected to vote on the proposed increase by the end of the month.
Columbus city council will hold public hearings on the proposal and possibly vote on the proposed increase in November.

My only income is from social security. I worked many years to earn that income. Because I live at a poverty level of income, I only pay a certain percentage of my income for gas and electric through a governmet program. I am still responsible for the balance in both accounts, however. When it comes to my water bill, which will increase drastically over the next few years, I am offered no such protection as far as my monthly payout goes. My understanding is that thousands of people will be forced out of their homes over the next few years because they will not be able to pay their water bill. This is no joke. Columbus has no compassion when it comes to keeping your water on. I am obviously disabled and they forced me to live without running water for over two years. I finally qualified for disability but was reduced to living like an animal for a very long time because of their water shutoff policy. For me, Columbus is a city without a heart or soul.
go for it.
Hold mayor Coleman and his brain trust of a city council responsible. We need to get them all out of office ASAP! This city has become an unsafe cess pool, and I just can’t fathom how these people continue to get voted back into office year after year.
People need to stop voting based on skin color or their political affiliation. Just because someone is a democrat doesn’t mean they are good for our city, the same thing goes for republicans. Vote for someone because you actually have done the research and agree with what the person represents and believes that they will do what is right for this city.
Also, why don’t we have term limits for the mayor? That’s up to the city council to set limitation. Wonder why that’s never been discussed?
problem is we as a groupo need to rise up agaist the city, get a layer and demand that all money be accouted for. get and independent AUDIT fimr amd AUDIT the city, show us why we need these increases and where all our money goes.
I know that’s probably true about the tax increase.
I thought the trash pick up was SUPPOSED to be included in your property taxes, but I’m probably wrong. I just know that I’m so sick and tired of everything going up. I’m about to pack up and head to the Tennessee hills. Everything is cheaper down there, problem is there’s hardly any decent jobs down there. If I had the money and the means to move south I would do it in a heartbeat. I’m so sick of Ohio, especially Columbus. I’m just sick of being stuck in this cess pool!!!!
You know the City of Columbus knew about this increase long before the vote on the income tax increase. They kept this quiet because they knew if this got out, there was no way the levy would pass. Now that they have more of your money, they’re raising the rates on everything else. Wait for the trash pickup…that’s coming too.
johnofgc - it most definitely is about the extra $40 a year. I’ve never had cable or dish so I can’t turn them off. I do have high speed internet but then I make my living using a computer that taps into the server at my office so I need high speed internet. My cell phone is paid for by my brother since he feels I need one “in case of emergency.“
I don’t have a car payment and sincerely hope my car lasts until the economy straightens out. It doesn’t qualify as a clunker and I couldn’t afford to take on a car payment anyway.
I don’t know what else I can give up except maybe the little bit I put in the collection plate at church - when I have a little bit left that is.
When a lot of folks say they don’t have any more to give they truly mean there is absolutely NOTHING left to give.
That makes that extra $40 a year something to worry about.
johnofgc: Huh?? Laman’s terms please.
My beef IS the extra money!! I don’t have an extra $40 per year no matter how little it is. I don’t have a LITTLE to spare!!!
In reading the comments the beef is not the $40 per year - $40 per year not $40 per month.
As to the mandate, why is not the federal stimulus money paying for these improvements in our infrastructure. I thought that was the prupose of the federal plan to help the economy via stimulus infusion for long term infrastructure programs already for digging but without local funds.
Did you notice how many complained about union wages going up but there wages and benifits are not. What is wrong with that picture? It would be a good bet the same people complaining are the same who usually brings up the word freedom of choice and individual decisions. So what is wrong with picture. By the way it is directly related to the water bill increase. The union contracts review each time the costs of living, ie utility bills, benifits, and then adjust the wages of their members to cover the cost. Simple process, the more demand the more you must supply - simple supply and deman, another pet phase from the freedom of choice group. The picture seems clear to me at least, all are free to form a union to protect their individual life style and be part of the supply and demand of our economy. And all are free to be against unions and then take the results. Think about it, management and especially the upper management follows this principle.
So what is the beef of only $40 per year. The problem of the individual beef on their higher expenses with their same revenue has a solution which will allows each individual to freely join in our demand to supply system. I fail to see justification in the beef by the individuals who chose not to work in an union environment. They very well know that as an individual you are much less likely to be part of demand to supply process than if joined into a large group which has power to bargin
I can’t take on any more!! My electric went up, my property taxes went up, my stupid city income tax is going up starting in Oct. I’m barely making it as it is. I have cancelled cable, I have cancelled my cell phone. I keep internet because most places have made it so you HAVE to pay bills online. I’ve cancelled all my credit cards because I don’t want to be in a whirlwind of debt. I live paycheck to paycheck BARELY able to pay my house payment. I have never gotten a raise at my job due to the economy and I have been there almost 3 years. I have all but cut out groceries from my budget. I don’t even eat lunches anymore at work nor take anything from home. I freakin live on cereal OR toast for DINNER!! Literally all I pay are my household bill and my car payment. And by the time Friday comes, I pray I have enough gas till I get paid. I guess I’m going to have to start washing my clothes with a wash board and hang them out to dry. I can’t cut anything else out. They are backing me into a corner and I’m afraid of losing everything. I can’t take anymore raises on anything. This is insane!!!
