City council approves Ohio State’s plan to build a women’s rowing boathouse in a city park.
COLUMBUS, Ohio—City council approved Ohio State’s plan to build a women’s rowing boathouse in a city park Monday.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
The university will pay to build the boathouse, but land will come from the city.
Groups representing area residents have opposed the project for two years.
Linden Nuby has fished the Scioto River at Duranceau Park since 1965 and said he doesn’t care about the boathouse—as long as he can keep fishing.
Greg and Lynn Breiding live near the park and walk along the quiet road. They fear the boathouse will change that.
“Taking the park land away from the people for a very … small group of people—just the OSU rowers,“ Lynn said.
“For the people that visit here and them all along here, it’s only going to be a very trafficked busy area,“ Greg said.
The city pointed out there is already a boat club 100 feet away.
Now that city council approved the project, work will start. The $4.4 million project was expected to be completed next year.

@deadbob The Olentangy “works” but not well. The water depth changes dramatically and eratically throughout. The length of it that is actually rowable is less than the length of an actual rowing race. And the rowers have been launching from the Drake Union, which is by no means a dedicated facility (it houses a lot of other student facilities and is getting old itself). I make no argument against your other argument that they could’ve made OSU pay for it(which is true, but you do have to keep in mind the traffic/business it will draw to the area), but just thought I would clarify the issues with the Olentangy.
Let’s see here…Isn’t Columbus currently having a budget crisis? Then tell me HOW can Columbus just give away an expensive piece of land.OSU has money MAJOR money, they could have easily paid for the land Columbus could have leased it to OSU.Make something for something. If this is the case I would like a small piece of land FREE too. What’s wrong with the Olentangy? can’t row there? I have been going top this park since i was in diapers in the mid ‘60’s it’s a plain shame to BOW DOWN TO OSU. Make them pay use the money for budget constraints something but free no way good going Coleman….ps Coleman is a weasel who will never speak for himself,so why not have Mayor Wilkerson tell us why this happened!!!!!!!!
