COLUMBUS, Ohio—Columbus’ police chief unveiled the division’s 2010 budget with potential safety cuts Tuesday.
NBC 4’s Patrick Preston reported with the FAST FACTS
Police Chief Walter Distelzweig announced the possible cuts at a Tuesday morning news conference.
Distelzweig said the division will cut or layoff 297 sworn officers if voters weren’t to approve the city’s half-percent income-tax increase in August.
The income-tax increase will be on the special Tuesday, Aug. 4, ballot.
CPD would need to reduce the number of sworn officers from 1,889 to 1,568 by Jan. 1, 2010.
The division said it anticipates 27 additional retirements in 2009.
In 2010, the division said it anticipates 45 more retirements, leaving a net of 1,523 sworn members by Dec. 31, 2010.
No civilian workers would be impacted—only officers.
Under the proposed budget-cutting scenario, the 1,568 officers would give Columbus the fewest number of sworn officers since 1993.
Layoffs would affect mostly patrol officers and would be based on seniority. Most of the layoffs would happen in the patrol division, using a “last in, first out” approach.
The high-school resource program would be eliminated, and other subdivisions would see significant job cuts, including vice, narcotics, burglary, economic crime unit, special-victims bureau, traffic and community liaisons.
If the income-tax increase does pass, Distelzweig said cuts would not be necessary.
“I think the citizens are going to do the right thing in August and when that happens then this will all be revised,“ he said.
Distelzweig said it’s not a scare tactic; it’s just math.
“The other part of this is the voters needed to be informed of what the consequences are of how they vote,“ Distelzweig said.
Justin Craig and his family have called police several times from their south Columbus home. He said he feels compelled to support the tax increase because he’s worried about longer response times.
“I think it’s probably going to spur people on a little more toward vigilantism. If you’re expecting no cop to come, you might just want to take care of the problem yourself,“ Craig said.
Columbus resident Art Berry said he’s having a tough time paying his bills and that adding new taxes would be too painful, so he’s planning to vote against the tax hike.
“I hate to lose the police officers. I hate to lose the firefighters, but somewhere we have to draw the line as to how far we’re going to be taxed,“ Berry said.
The CPD proposed budget cuts would total almost $26 million.
The city already has slashed $13 million this year and may have to cut another $16 million.
The half-percent increase could bring the city $100 million.
Community leaders have said they cannot afford to lose any more safety programs.
NBC 4 was told that the fire department is working on its own plan of projected budget cuts if the increase fails.
Police will decrease security for Red, White and Boom! this summer due to budget woes.

Not falling for nothing. I VOTE NO, now and when the levy is presented. They can turn out the lights and call it a day and i could care less. I have watched this city rot for the last twenty years and twenty before that it was half way decent. I would say Coleman had a hand in it.. Going the way of Detroit and Washngton D.C. and now the whole country…. Great isnt it. We had chief of police forever they couldnt get rid of and now you have a mayor ... and now we have a president.. way to go liberals… Getting better daily….
People your starting to fall for it.I dont want the police and fire to be laid off and the mayor and council are banking on that to get money.
let this fail, vote no and when the he*l breaks loose the mayor and council will figure out something quick or they will pay a heavy price.
People, people the vast majority of sane people would want to keep the police and fire dept as well staffed as possible. And the majority of the people want the criminals punished for their crimes and i dont mean tv and basketball. BUT.. it doesnt matter what we want.. IT only matters what lawyers want ..YES there should be more focus on the victims and not the scumbags but there is no money in the victims, the money is in the scumbags supported by taxpayers. If we disposed of the murderers .. in a timely manner .. no over crowding ..but ..no money for lawyers in an endless series of appeals over the cup cake the scumbag didnt get when he was two. And no money for the shrinks to study the weird minds of these pathetic two legged animals. See when it gets down to the nitty gritty it doesnt matter what people want .. it matters what lawyers want and they want money. Grease that legal machine. Write some new laws…that no one can understand. Lets go into court and argue about what that law means. God help us all… but he isnt allowed to any longer so looks like we all go down the tubes. ITS THE LAW…
I totally agree. we need to KEEP our Police dept. AND our Firefighters..
Cut back on the foster programs because they dont do they’re jobs anyway..!!!
NONE of them do..
Again, if you want a safer place to live with less destructive, violent crime; don’t live in Columbus. But, until the day comes when the people say enough is enough and start to deal with the problem makers is a honest, responsible and effective manner; then throwing all kinds of money,to police, firemen, eyes in the sky, social workers and various welfare agencies will be to no avail. I will take primary responsibility for my own safety and well being and vote no for a tax increase.
Keep the choppers KEEP THE WHOLE POLICE FORCE AND THEN SOME.Look i do,nt like the mayor anymore than anyone else but we need the police and fire dept now more than ever. With people going around at ranndom setting fires in vacant or occupied homes we need a fire dept to putout those fires so hopefully no one will get hurt or killed. Plus crime is getting worse every day because of drugs and the economy and people losing their jobs and we will need all the help we can get from our police force regardless of what our stupid greedy mayor thinks.I was going to vote no in august but after thinking about it i think i will vote yes but i am counting down the days till we vote for a NEW MAYOR.maybe the mayor wants to hold the safety and security of the citizens of this city hostage but i do,nt so i AM VOTING YES.
Ice the choppers!
Rome is ready to fall!!!
Who is putting the text up on the teleprompter? great oratater my a*s.
I know why he picked biden for a V.P.
That idiot can make anyone look like a scholar.
Vote with your head next time instead of symbolic passions.
Better yet dont vote!!!!!!!!!!!
YES WE CAN .... just remember that and all will be fine… That one person was never even proud of her country even tho she had the best of everything…now she is proud..YES WE CAN… Quit your crying .... you wanted change…. here it is… enjoy it…and more to come ... this is just the tip of the iceberg.
I for one would like to see the HELICOPTORS cut out or at least cut in half. It would be nice just one night to sit outside without the constant sound of a circling helicoptor. Do we really need as many as we have? I think sometimes the pilots are just out for joy rides.
