Ohio Chrysler Workers Approve Contract Changes

TWINSBURG, Ohio—Members of the United Auto Workers union at a Chrysler plant in northeast Ohio have voted in favor of contract modifications that might help keep the plant open.
UAW Local 122 says the vote Wednesday at the Twinsburg plant near Cleveland was 88 percent in favor of the revised contract and 12 percent against it.
The deal is a part of the tentative national agreement between the troubled automaker and the union. That agreement mostly focuses on wage and benefit concessions in exchange for 55 percent of the company’s stock. The company must get concessions as part of its push for more government loans.
The Twinsburg plant has about 1,250 workers and is operating at about 30 percent capacity.

My respect goes out to all the UAW workers who are sacrificing to keep the auto industry going, a building block of this nation. They are to be commended. However, I have to ask, if the taxpayers through lawmakers are requiring Autoworkers to take concessions, why aren’t we as taxpayers of Reynoldsburg requiring the same of our teachers? Instead of looking at concessions, the District is looking at giving them between $1.6M and $2.05M in raises! I think the UAW is at LEAST as worthy as the teachers.
