COALTON, Ohio—Authorities say a couple died in a fire that whipped through a house in southern Ohio’s Jackson County.

A sheriff’s deputy was driving by the home in Coalton around 5 a.m. Thursday and spotted smoke pouring out. Firefighters arrived a few minutes later, and once they were able to go inside they found the bodies of 70-year-old Raymond Kimbleton and his 69-year-old wife Phyllis Kimbleton.

A spokesman for the state fire marshal’s office says no smoke detectors were found inside the house, located about 65 miles south of Columbus. Authorities say it appears the fire began in the living room, but the cause remains under investigation.
