Ex-Petland Worker Gets Probation Over Rabbit Drownings

» 13 Comments | Post a Comment

AKRON, Ohio—A former Ohio pet-store employee has been sentenced to six months of probation for drowning two injured rabbits and showing off about it on Facebook.

A judge in Akron also ordered Liz Carlisle to do 120 hours of community service and fined her $250 on Thursday. That was after the 20-year-old woman changed her previous not guilty plea to guilty on two counts of animal cruelty.

Defense attorney Ron Gatts says Carlisle decided she wanted to put the case behind her. He says she received death threats and was attacked verbally over a Facebook photo showing her with the rabbits.

The case led Petland Inc. to shut down the Akron store where Carlisle worked. The chain said the rabbits suffered “horrific mistreatment.“

obamalover: You are either a liar or completely ignorant about the NRA. Most likely the latter because you blindly follow whatever your fearless leader tells you. The NRA is far from being filled with extremists. Ever heard of the Eddie Eagle program that teaches kids about gun safety? You wouldn’t mention it even if you had because that wouldn’t fit into your preconceived agenda. While I don’t condone the deliberate cruely of animals, sometimes things have to be done. What really gets me is the unbelievable hypocrisy of the Left. You people will scream bloody murder about animals and meat or fur coats, but won’t say a word about millions of innocent babies being slaughtered with abortion every year. Killing an animal for meat or fur is murder to you, but when a baby is killed in the womb for convenience sake, you’ll call that choice. How pathetic!

@MLL:  If you feel this way then I strongly recommend ditching the NRA and joining the American Hunters and Shooters Association.  The NRA is filled with extremists and their record on land conservation is horrible.  I don’t hunt, but I’m also not a veg.  It’s a moral dilemma that I struggle with, but that’s just me.

I have to agree with ObamaLover on believing this is cruel and not necessary at a pet store.  I also need to clear up your misconception that NRA members are animal haters.  I am an NRA member, a democrat, like animals way more than people, and also believe in ones right to hunt humanely (not my option, but it is others).

Growing up on a ranch, sometimes animals need put down, and sometimes the methods don’t “appear” humane.  Most ranchers choose the most humane ways regardless of appearance.

Euthanasia isn’t humane (or legal) in a pet store, that is what should be addressed, a vet should have been called in to access the situation.

Signing off as a card carrying NRA member, Obama loving, death penalty believing, lesbian.

And I have pet rabbits, but since you seem to only be into killing them, I guess you can’t see outside of that.

Well at least we have a few things in common.  You still sound like you’re defending this woman.

obamalover, we’re supose to use the word rabit at least once in the commnent. You should keep that job you claim, cause you sure are off on ever thing else. I’m a lifetime democrat, was a cattle rancher, have worked steady for 42 years and counting. I see at least in your second “comment” that you cleaned up your foul mouth trash talking a bit. I’ve been to Africa and as far as China, you would love those places, buying live food at the market, I loved it. Rabits are only good for one thing, food and pelts. Its the way of the world. see ya in the woods.

Rabbits being fed to snakes isn’t that big of a deal because they’re feeding.  It’s apparently how they eat.

She should not have drowned them, especially in the work place.  She should have consulted.

If the rabbits in your yard were seriously wounded then I understand about putting them out of their misery, but don’t throw them in the trash.  You should give them a proper burial.  It’s respectful and gives back to the earth.

They must not have snakes at that Petland. I wonder if she would have been charged if she posted photos of a boa constrictor strangling the rabbits. Those pictures would have been borderline grotesque. (I won’t give the gory details.) We witnessed a feeding just like this recently at a pet store and it was not a pretty sight. But the result is the same - dead rabbits. One is apparently a crime and the other is not.

The article says the rabbits were injured. Is this really a crime? It was poor taste to post the photos and brag about it, but I’m really not seeing the issue. I killed two baby rabbits that my dog got a hold of this summer to end their suffering. Could I be charged for this? Since my dog had no interest in eating them, just playing rough, what were my options? I couldn’t throw them over the fence into my neighbor’s yard. So I guess I could have thrown them into the trash can and let them die slowly or I could have left them in the yard to keep getting chewed upon until they eventually died. Instead I chose to end life quickly. I sure hope I am anonymous on here and won’t get charged for this admission.

@marcos1:  I can tell you I’m not a veggie, but perhaps a hypocrite on some things, then again aren’t we all?  I’ve never been to a slaughter house nor do I really want to, but I have been to many places.  I’m college educated, have lived out of the country multiple times and have traveled quite a bit.  And I have a great job.

Essentially what you’re saying is that it’s ok for this person to do this.  I may not be a veggie, but I am an animal lover and I have respect for them.  Drowning rabbits at a pet store is beyond disrespectful and immoral.  For you to say that they don’t seem to suffer when they’re being drowned is ridiculous.  You sound like an NRA member.  Am I right?  Have fun meeting Sarah Palin tonight in Dublin.  That is if you can get there because you’re unemployed.

obamalover, you must be a “vegie” or you are a hypocrite. Ever been to a slauter house? I bet not, I bet you have not been to many places at all. You probably think food comes from the freezer in back of the grocery store. How about, just let the men take care of the food makin’. and you can cry for the rabits. signed Elmer Fudd.
