MINFORD, Ohio—Ohio authorities investigating the death of a 2-year-old say the boy’s father reported the child was shot by an older brother.

Sheriff Marty Donini in southern Ohio’s Scioto County says Monday’s shooting was first reported by a neighbor. A second 911 call came from the father of the boys, saying his 8-year-old had shot the 2-year-old with a shotgun.

The younger child was pronounced dead at the home in Minford. Donini says a third brother, a 3-year-old, was treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound to an arm.

The sheriff said in a news release Tuesday that detectives planned to meet with the county prosecutor to discuss possible criminal charges. Donini also says county authorities have removed the children from the home.

A spokesman at the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office says the department is handling the investigation into Monday’s shooting death of a two-year-old Minford boy, allegedly by his eight-year-old brother, as accidental.

Captain David Hall said no final determination as to a ruling in the death has been made but they are treating the shooting as accidental.

“We are waiting for the autopsy results,” Hall said. “Once we have all of that and we complete our investigation, we will present it to the (Scioto County) prosecutor.”

At the same time the two-year-old was killed, his three-year-old brother was wounded requiring treatment at SOMC, prompting the Times to ask how many shots had been fired.

“There was only one shot fired,” Hall said. “It was a shotgun, and the three-year-old was hit with some of the buckshot from the shell.”

No I don’t hunt but I know what my brother was hunting for and we still are unsure where he picked it up at as to my brother doesn’t keep ammo in in house.

I’m confused - or maybe you (aunt) are.  You stated that the shotgun was accessible because the father was hunting rabbits for food for his family.  In a later post, though, you state that there was one shot and it struck both children because it was loaded with buck shot.  I don’t know many people that hunt rabbits with buck shot…there wouldn’t be anything left of the rabbit!  Most people prefer a No. 6 shot for small game.  I don’t think buck shot is even legal or available in Ohio any more.  I’m very sorry for your loss - I have kids and can’t imagine how I’d feel if anything like this happened.  The article never really touched on any suggested motive (if there was one), or if it was suspected to be a purely accidental shooting.

No my brother did not shoot my nephew. Nor did the 8yr. old. HMM wonder why gsr report has yet to be released. It doesn’t even matter who did what it would not bring my nephew back. We dont need persons saying should have or what if what we need is prayers and support. This is the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life and I never ever want to go through this again. Could someone please point out to me where on the Franklin or Scioto County sheriff’s web site where it states where to get free gun locks I have searched and never found it. As for what was it doing out. Its rabbit season and he was hunting for food for his children. Okay sure maybe it should have been in a gun safe but with bullets not being kept in the house it shouldn’t matter if its locked up or not. Guns are usually not kept in the house nor are bullets he thought he had hid it but apparently not. The bullet was picked up at another house and no-one knew it was. Children get into things without anyone knowing. If you show me a parent that keeps there child beside them 24 hours a day I will be surprised. I am unable to believe that persons in this world don’t allow their children to play in their rooms alone. Unless your part of my family you will never understand or know the truth behind this story. No he doesn’t live in a trailor park he lives on my Grandparents property. They are providing the best they can for those boys.

Something sounds fishy here, sounds like the father did it and is trying to put the blame on the 8 year old.But i don’t know i wasn’t there, this man should have had this gun lock up.My prayers are with the family.

An 8-yr old gets off two shots with a shot gun and hits both siblings. I’m having a real hard time envisioning it.

There is nothing funny about this situation. I do not find a child being shot to death amusing. I am sick and tired of hearing grown people being unable and unwilling to be accountable for the idiotic things they do.

foreveramusing, yeah, that’s real amusing. This man just had the tragedy of his life happen and you make a statement like that?  You gloat about this??  What a disgusting human being you are.  You don’t know him, where he lived or anything else about his life. Trailer park?  Where does it say that in this report??  People like you sicken me.

The father seems stunned that his son had the shotgun that was readily available to him. My, that sure is a shocking development to all the folks in the trailer park that he didn’t secure the weapon.
