Ganahl Celebrates 30 Years On NBC 4
Jym Ganahl celebrates his 30th anniversary of Central Ohio weather broadcasts on NBC 4.
CENTRAL OHIO—Jym Ganahl celebrated his 30th anniversary of Central Ohio weather broadcasts on NBC 4 Thursday, Jan. 15.
Jym serves as Storm Team 4 chief meteorologist and appears on NBC 4 at 5, 6 and 11 p.m. You also can find his forecasts online at

Jym came to NBC 4 Jan. 15, 1979, after working as a weather anchor for KWWL-TV in Waterloo, Iowa, for 12 years.
“I am amazed that after all of these years, I still am not bored any day. I always want to come to work early every day. I’ll talk weather with anyone, anytime, all the time. I love it,” Jym said.
A native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jym earned degrees in math, speech and climatology from the University of Northern Iowa.
Jym’s career began at age 17 when he became the youngest weather forecaster in the United States. In 1970, Jym became the youngest person to be granted the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval.
Jym also taught science and math at St. Agatha School in Upper Arlington for several years as well as a special summer camp for gifted students at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Jym and Storm Team 4 received first place in the Ohio Associated Press Awards for Outstanding Weather Operation in June 2001 and second place in May 1997.
He was inducted into the Ohio Associated Press Broadcasting Hall of Fame in June 2008.
Jym also has been honored with the Columbus Monthly reader’s poll as best weatherperson for the 19th consecutive year in 2008 and The Other Paper’s Top Pick for Best Weatherman in 2008.
Jym was awarded the Spirit and Honor Medal while serving in the United States Army, where he was also the outstanding marksman with an M-16 rifle as well as the outstanding scout award before ending his military career with the Iowa National Guard in flight operation with a helicopter unit.
