FAIRBORN, Ohio—The beating death of a Kent State University student has brought hundreds of people together in two different parts of Ohio.

Friends grieving over the loss of Christopher Kernich gathered Monday night for a benefit in his hometown of Fairborn, just outside Dayton. Those who knew him remembered Kernich as big-hearted and giving.

Money was collected in buckets for the family’s funeral and medical expenses.

Twenty-three-year-old Kernich died Saturday, nearly a week after police say he and other Kent State students were assaulted by three men. Two arrests have been made.

About 300 students and faculty members demanded better security at a Monday night meeting on Kent State’s northeast Ohio campus.

University police say they’re increasing patrols.
