Ohio’s Largest County Discovers $400K Error

CLEVELAND - An error led Ohio’s largest county to spend $400,000 in federal money it never got, and officials are scrambling so local taxpayers aren’t stuck with the bill.
   
In June, Cuyahoga County commissioners in Cleveland approved contracts to spend the government grant dollars on services for uninsured AIDS and HIV patients.
   
However, a federal deadline had required commissioners to act by the end of February.
   
Cuyahoga County government relations officer Jim Corrigan says two county employees waited too long to schedule the vote.
   
By the time the error was discovered in July, the money was already gone from the county’s coffers.
   
Officials are now begging a federal agency to forgive the blunder and come through with the money.
