Roadside Bomb Kills Ohio Marine

PAINESVILLE, Ohio—An Ohio Marine has been killed by a roadside bomb while on combat foot patrol in Afghanistan.

The Pentagon says 22-year-old Lance Cpl. David R. Baker of Painesville northeast of Cleveland died Tuesday. He was wounded while on patrol in Afghanistan’s volatile Helmand province, one of the front lines against the Taliban.

No details were disclosed in Wednesday’s Pentagon announcement.

Baker was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

The 2006 graduate of Riverside High School in Painesville had been scheduled to return home Nov. 29. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in August 2006.
