CENTRAL OHIO—The utility with the largest number of Ohio customers still out from this week’s wind storm says additional crews are arriving to help.
American Electric Power was still trying to resolve about 10,000 outages Friday, down from a high of more than 165,000 after the state was whipped by gusts of up to 70 mph on Wednesday. Companies statewide reported more than 25,000 customers without power.

AEP UPDATE
In Franklin County, there were more than 1,323 AEP customers without power and another 737 in Delaware County Friday afternoon.
AEP said the majority of Franklin and Delaware County homes should have power back Sunday, but homes in the Southwest quarter of Franklin County likely will have power Saturday.
According to American Electric Power, approximately 9,400 AEP customers in Central Ohio were without power as of 3 p.m. Friday.
AEP said it expects to have most areas back up by Sunday. Some communities, including Newark, Athens and Lancaster, may not have power restored until Monday.
The company estimates some customers in Wellston in southeast Ohio have to wait until Wednesday.
The outages primarily were caused by wind and weakened trees crashing down on lines and poles.
Soft ground conditions caused some give in poles and continued to create issues for trucks and crews in the field.
AEP officials said they feel they have learned from recent storms on how to cover the area and respond to customers. Officials also said there are some things they know they could improve upon.
AEP said it’s working hard to respond to the individual needs of customers.
The director of communications said it’s been the most difficult stretch of time she can remember with storms and outages in the 18 years she’s been with the company.
SOUTH CENTRAL POWER UPDATE
South Central Power had about 469 customers without power at 2 p.m. Friday.
CONSOLIDATED ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE
Consolidated Electric Cooperative reported approximately 80 members experiencing electric outages at 3 p.m.
LICKING RURAL ELECTRIC
The Energy Cooperative reported no outages at 3 p.m.
CLOSINGS
- A number of Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicle Deputy Registrar locations across the state may be closed or offering limited services due to wind damage many areas received overnight. Call ahead to your local Deputy Registrar to verify open hours.

This level of wind is not unusual. How many times in the space of a few months does the power get to go out for so many of us before we start demanding that the power companies bury lines and that trees be trimmed back from power lines? After the last outtage I was appalled to see so many trees still encircling power lines, and apparently homeowners were not fined for failing to maintain their trees. This kind of wind should not provoke these outtages, and when this happens it sure seems like our infrastructures are held together with old string and rusty wires.
When this storm hit I was in the middle of having an MRI done, the power went out at the facility that I was having it done at. Thankfully they didnt lose the scans that they had done on me, BUT when I went to leave I could have sworn that the MRI machine teleported me to Florida. I honestly felt like I was in a hurricane. It was crazy to see the rain going sideways like it was. We are lucky that my neighborhood didnt lose power. Usually you just say the word storm and our power goes out. I hope that everyone without power gets theirs back in a reasonable time frame.
