COLUMBUS, Ohio—Authorities reopened downtown streets and all area parking lots after a construction accident and a resulting gas leak.

NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.

Authorities closed a portion of eastbound Town and State streets between South 3rd and South 4th streets in Downtown shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The leak was contained shortly before 5:30 p.m.

Town and State streets were reopened to traffic at about 5:30 p.m., and people were allowed to enter nearby parking lots.

The closings were due to a construction accident.

A private contractor doing work for American Electric Power hit a two-inch high-pressure gas line.

The actual gas leak was on South 4th Street.

Columbus fire and Columbus police departments, Columbia Gas and two AEP crews were called to the scene.

Smaller businesses and parking lots were shut down or evacuated for safety purposes.

Traffic on South 4th Street, south of Town, was rerouted to Rich Street.  All roads were open Tuesday just before 11 p.m.

NBC 4 originally reported the gas leak was a result of a motor-vehicle crash. An on-scene photojournalist corrected that report.

facts are often far and few between….take with a grain of salt anything reported that you don’t see yourself and then one might not be seeing the whole story…so let’s all give some slack here and update with facts, as we become aware of them. Glad everybody is ok.

check your facts - we have not been evacuated from the building at 4th & Town streets—we can smell the gas and we have no way to get fresh air, since we’ve been told to stay in the building.
