Residents Fighting Against Hilliard Roundabouts
HILLIARD, Ohio—There is nothing new about roundabouts in Hilliard. They already have five in the city.
It’s the locations of two new planned roundabouts that have some people upset.
Two new roundabouts are being planned—one at the corner of Scioto Darby and Main and the other Cemetery and Main next to Hilliard Station School. (To view the map of the proposed roundabouts, click here.
City officials said safety is the number one priority—so much so that they will be installing new crosswalks that are more visible, new signage for all crosswalks, flashing overhead lighting and school zones will be extended east and south to enforce the speed.
Even with the precautions, some residents are still debating the roundabouts.
“It’s going to mess up traffic a little bit. I think a lot of people avoid those things. A lot of older people that do too … come in here. They say we can do without them,“ said Allen Adkins, an area business owner.
The Hilliard United Methodist Church in the area is currently suing the city to stop the roundabout from being built. They said they think it will restrict access to the church.
The project is scheduled to start in the spring.

modern roundabouts operate at 15-20 miles per hour. This is why they are safer than signalized intersections (half the crashes, 80% fewer injuries or fatals) and this also means motorists have more time to see and avoid conflicts. Roundabouts have islands at the entries so pedestrians only have to watch traffic in one direction at a time - much easier for children and the elderly. Many cities in the US have constructed roundabouts near schools without incident.
We are putting our children at risk with these roundabouts. It is a dangerous intersection as is, but at least there is a traffic light. Kids will have to cross the street where cars don’t stop?! Does this really make sense? Yes cars will be going slower with the roundabout, but they don’t have to stop. Roundabouts have their place, but not by a school. We have had to many kids hurt in the past couple of years. I would like to stop this trend not add to it.
Come on Hilliard, I know you don’t have the greatest leadership on the planet but there is a time and place for a roundabout and a time for traffic lights. This is a time for traffic lights. Now that I’ve been able to make this decision for you let’s stick to lights.
where exactly is the traffic going to go after they’ve gone through the first roundabout while waiting on the second one to be clear..it’s a constant nightmare of people blocking and clogging the intersection already. BAD IDEA!!!
I’ve lived in this area all my life, I drive through that intersection about 4 times a day to get to and from work…if they think it’s going to be easier on pedestrians they’re crazy, no way will hilliard drivers slow down for pedestrians…they need to just kick donatos out of there and widen the road and then build a bridge over the road for pedestrians, the church that’s suing has a huge parking lot on the side of the road that faces away from main street, which means technically including the access they’re concerned about they have 3 different entrances…this whole thing is ludicrous.
It’s nice to see others in Hilliard who oppose the roundabouts. I feel they are helpful in some circumstances however it doesn’t take 5 to get from Cemetary Rd to Tuttle Crossing effectively. I feel the city has wasted our tax dollars and they honestly can be very dangerous. I was concerned to see they may put one in at a very busy intersection at Main and Scioto Darby. I feel that’s a mistake. I’m wondering if a former New Jersey resident is just trying to make this feel more like home…and failing to meet the needs of OUR community.
I ‘ve been on the roundabouts and they are fine during non rush hour times, but very dangerous and frustrating during high traffic times. One lane of traffic starts going through and the other cars from other directions aren’t able to merge on the roundabout like it was designed. None of the roundabouts have the amount of pedestrian traffic that occurs at the Hilliard intersection. There are 5 schools and also a neighborhood that comes out right near this intersection. Also a church and many businesses that are at that intersection that will be affected.
I believe your the moron - I drive a school bus for Hilliard, have lived in Hilliard for over 20 years and have 3 children in HCS - the roundabouts - bad idea period - there are already traffic lights and stop signs in the area - no way the roundabouts will slow traffic - I will worry EVERY day that a child walking to school will be hurt.
Two roundabouts in such close proximity will cause nothing but headaches!
I would support having one large roundabout around “pizza island,“ but not two in that area.
Where do I sign up for the protest?
What moron would complain about slowing traffic near a school? Roudabouts are what make dublin so nice! Shame on you Hillard
