DEPARTMENT OVERVIEWS
Content: - Students participating in the internship program in the Content Department become knowledgeable in many different aspects of the News operation. The interns will interact with the assignment editors researching stories, making police checks, and answering phones. Interns will observe the news edit area where stories are prepared for broadcast, video feeds are brought in from remote news coverage locations and news video archives are maintained. Interns will also have the opportunity to shadow reporters and photographers in the field, giving them a first-hand experience at the news gathering process. Additionally, interns will spend time with producers in the newsroom and the control room, learning how a newscast is assembled and broadcast. There will also be ample opportunity to interact with the Anchors of the newscasts as well. In some situations, an intern may be assigned to work with one function of the News room such as Photography or Investigative Reporting or Sports.
Operations/Production: - This internship provides an overview of all technical operating positions: camera, TelePrompTer, and directing. The primary focus is live newscast execution with some hands on training. The internship may also provide an overview of maintenance engineering. If desired, the intern will observe and assist with various aspects of electronic and computer equipment maintenance and installation. Due to unique circumstances, internships in Operations/Production are limited.
Sales: - Sales internships which incorporate the basics of broadcast marketing and Sales with the experiences a veteran staff can deliver. The intern will become an integral part of the NBC 4 Sales team. Interns will have the opportunity to evaluate a career in media sales and gather a broad range of knowledge and skills from experiences in the office and in the field. We expect students to be inquisitive, proactive and enthusiastic. If you desire a sales and marketing internship which is structured and rewarding – this is it!
Marketing: - A student pursuing an internship in the Marketing Department will learn Community Relations as well as the Promotions functions. The Marketing Internship offers many opportunities for professional growth. Interns will have exposure to both the technical and personal aspects of advertising and promotions. Interns have the chance to assist producers on shoots as well as to interact greatly with the public, coordinating station sponsored events such as Red, White & Boom!, 4’s Army Drives, Call 4’s and much more. Interns also work with reporters and anchors to schedule public personal appearances. Interns work in an exciting, creative, yet structured atmosphere. So, if you are looking to gain experience in event coordination and all the behind-the-scenes efforts that makes events possible, this is the position to choose.
Interactive: - Interns work with the nbc4i.com interactive team researching and gathering content for station website. There are also opportunities to work with the station's Interactive Managing Editor in the News Department and Interactive Director on web design and content creation. Additional opportunities exist based on the intern's skill and ability.
Finance: - Finance Interns will learn and apply basic finance and accounting principles within the context of a "real world" business scenario. Interns will have the opportunity to make judgments on finance and accounting decisions and defend those decisions to the VP of Finance.
Human Resources: - HR's greatest value is to help the business become more competitive. This is accomplished by ensuring that four critical mandates: business partner, change agent, infrastructure expert and employee champion are fulfilled. An internship opportunity within the Human Resource Department will provide the opportunity to build the competencies necessary for a successful career.
