House Subcommittee To Hold Hearing On BCS
Published: April 30, 2009
WASHINGTON —The political football that is the Bowl Championship Series lands in Congress this week as lawmakers examine whether the system for awarding a national championship is fair.
BCS coordinator John Swofford is among the witnesses invited to Friday’s hearing.
Several lawmakers are pushing bills on the BCS. Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, for example, has sponsored legislation that would prevent the NCAA from calling a college football game a “national championship” unless it results from a playoff system.
Barton is the top Republican on the Energy and Commerce Committee; Friday’s hearing will be held in that committee’s commerce, trade and consumer protection subcommittee.
President Barack Obama has said he would prefer an eight-team playoff system.

Does Congress have nothing more important to worry about than to debate if the BCS is a true national championship? Why don’t they start by passing legislation that would help improve the economy? Maybe even save a failing GM without freely handing out billions. How the NCAA selects a national champion or any other sports related issue should not be a top priority for the United States government at this moment.
US Congress Representatives: Please provide the citizens with the services that you were elected to do. You were not elected to dictate professional or amateur sports but you were elected to work to help improve every citizen’s quality of life. Leave the sports issues up to bureaucracy that represent them.
