COLUMBUS, Ohio— The Buckeyes’ Halloween candy tasted like touchdowns Saturday. OSU marched past outmanned New Mexico State 45-0 at the Horseshoe.
After a scoreless 1st quarter, the Buckeye floodgates opened. QB Terrelle Pryor scored on an 8-yard keeper on the quarter’s 1st play. On the ensuing kickoff, Aaron Pettrey attempted an onside kick and recovered the ball himself. Moments later, Pryor found Dane Sanzenbacher for a 19-yard TD pass and a 14-0 lead. The lead grew to 21-0 after another play of deception by the Bucks. A reverse pass thrown by WR Devier Posey to Sanzenbacher in the endzone covered 39 yards. The Bucks scored for the final time in the half with 56 seconds to play when Brandon Saine took an option pitch 3 yards for his first TD of the season.
By halftime the Bucks had gained more than 300 yards in building its 28-0 lead, while NMSU had gained 41 .
OSU opened the 2nd half with a 34 yard field goal by reserve kicker and former Columbus Crew player Devin Barclay. Pettrey suffered a sprained right knee in the 1st half and did not return.
Waverly native Trevor Walls entered the game at QB for NMSU but found the Buckeye defense less than hospitable. Walls fumbled a snap near his own goalline and Brian Rolle recovered in the endzone for an Ohio State touchdown. OSU closed the 3rd quarter with a 53-yard TD run by Boom Herron, his first appearance since the Wisconsin game. That touchdown ended the scoring, as OSU covered the massive 44-point spread. Pryor did not play in the second half.
“We talked the past couple days about needing to play fast and play well and do better, we practiced well this week and got it done decisively.“ OSU Head Coach Jim Tressel said.
Ohio State faces perhaps its toughest challenge of the season next Saturday at Penn State. “They’re gonna be knockdown drag out games coming up. We’re gonna need everybody. “ Tressel said.
