The new iPod is not your grandma’s iPod. Apple’s highest selling product is getting a huge overhaul.
The new iPod touch will feature front and rear facing cameras. Also, facetime – Apple’s video chat program – will be included.
But these aren’t the only changes you will see on the iPod. The iPod shuffle is looking like the shuffle of old by returning to regular buttons and its squared-off shape. The iPod Nano will get a touch screen.
But what’s really got people buzzing is the new iTunes. Ping is a social networking program built into iTunes that will allow users to follow both friends and musicians – and maybe eventually, sharing of music between friends.
Ping could turn into the next “big thing” in the tech world. It could render P2P, or peer to peer, music sharing programs like Morpheus and Bearshare obsolete. That is, if people are willing to pay the initial costs of downloading music from the Apple store.
Ping was an extremely late addition to the highly anticipated iTunes 10, which became available yesterday. But Apple says better late than never and, if they’re right, it will payoff big time.
