Office Health Hazard: Sitting Can Be Deadly

»  Comments | Post a Comment

A new study has identified an office health hazard that's hard to avoid.

Cardiologists say the amount of time you spend sitting behind a desk has a direct link to your heart health.

"Specifically sitting has been identified in this large epidemiological study to increase the risk of death, primarily by cardiovascular mortality," explains cardiologist Dr. Michael Rothkopf.

More than 123,000 people were followed for 14 years as part of the study.

Women who spent six hours sitting had a 37 percent increased risk of dying.

Men had a 17 percent risk.

The study is published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Dr. Rothkopf says exercise can reduce the risk.

A large portion of the risk is alleviated if you're somebody who sits but also are someone who is active otherwise, although you still have a slightly higher risk, he explains.
