A recent survey by the American Dietetic Association finds that they can be a breeding ground for germs.
The survey found that 22 percent of office refrigerators are only cleaned once or twice a year.
Experts recommend throwing out or freezing leftovers within three or four days instead of letting them linger in the fridge.
