[dateline] -- The Columbus City School Board will ask voters to approve a $164 million bond levy and an 7.85 mill operating expense levy this November. But another group says they need to be discussing merit pay for teachers.

The Buckeye Institute, a conservative public policy advocacy organization based in Columbus is pushing for financial bonuses as high as $10,000 to attract and retain high-quality teachers who help to improve student test scores and who earn positive marks in supervisor evaluations. And the group is asking school boards like Columbus to find funding for the bonuses.

Columbus City Schools currently has a similar merit pay pilot program in place at for Columbus schools. The district may bring merit pay into the conversation when they begin to negotiate a new teacher’s contract. The current deal expires next year.
