The shelves at Lutheran Social Services on Champion Avenue are slowly filling with school supplies.
Recognizing the economy is hurting everyone, they hope to help at least 500 families, providing students with new backpacks, paper, pencils and glue sticks.
"We all know when we are kids its embarrassing if we take used and old things when everybody else at school has got the new ones,” explains Barbara Packer.
With the need so great, first link, a social service provider for Central Ohioans, reports the number of organizations like Lutheran social services has more than doubled.
"It rose from 6 last year to 14 this year and I believe it due to the current economic situation. They need in the community at the moment has forced a lot of people to seek resources in various places," according to Frances Butler, manger of 2-1-1 at FIRSTLINK.
Families looking for some help need only call 2-1-1
When you do a call center employee will ask for your zip code. This will help FIRSTLINK determine which agency can help you.
You will also need to provide the number of children in your household...
And you may be asked about your income.
With school just weeks away, Lutheran Services hopes donations pick up real soon.
