CENTRAL OHIO -- Do you think credit-card marketing on college campuses is problematic?
Rep. Thomas Patton introduced a bill at the Statehouse last week that would prohibit credit-card companies from marketing on Ohio college campuses, NBC 4's Mikaela Hunt reported.
Patton called credit card companies predators on college campuses who prey on young and financially naive students.
Most importantly, Patton said, he hopes the legislation would start a discussion about money between students and parents.
The state treasurer unveiled thousands of comments on credit-card practices in our state just last week. Several respondents noted they believe credit-card marketing on college campuses is a problem.
Discover has a corporate office in New Albany and told NBC 4 that for the past two years the company has followed a self-imposed rule to not market on or near college campuses.
Much of the law that applies to credit cards has to be generated at a federal level.
Patton said he isn't sure the bill will make it to the hearing process because it is an election year.
He said he introduced it to see what kind of publicity it could get. If people take interest and there is a lively debate, he would re-introduce it in January.
