CCS Maintains 'C' Average

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Grades are in, and the Columbus City Schools scored a continuous-improvement rating.

On a scale of A to F, the district maintained a "C" average according to the Ohio Department of Education.

CCS met six out of 30 state indicators compared to five last year.

The attendance rate stayed about the same at 94.1 percent.

The graduation rate dropped slightly to 70.6 percent from 72.9.

Superintendent Dr. Gene Harris said the graduation rate reflects the class of 2007, the first class to tackle the Ohio graduation test.

"We'll make adjustments. The first year for anything is usually challenging. We're glad to maintain over a 70 percent mark," Harris said.

School Board President Dr. Terry Boyd told NBC 4’s Ana Jackson, "I’m thrilled we did not back up. Some scores got a little better. But we still have to work harder."

Boyd said he wants the district to earn a "B" average by next year.

A district analyst said he's waiting for the state's overall education report card to see how CCS compares.
