WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- As college students and their parents geared up for back-to-school time, most thought about moving into a dorm or apartment and buying books. But it was more than just school supplies and campus housing that one Ohio department recommended for students, reported NBC 4's Lauren Diedrich.
Otterbein junior Chelci Fauss-Johnson recently moved in to her off-campus apartment and admitted that locking her door wasn't always part of her routine.
"I really don't lock the door that much," Fauss-Johnson said. "I just shut my room door and turn the lock there."
A habit such as that can leave pricey student possessions -- such as a laptop or other electronics -- susceptible to theft.
That's one reason the Ohio Department of Insurance urged parents and their students to look into renter's insurance.
Renter's insurance may be covered under your homeowner's policy; if not, the insurance will protect your student's property and possessions if they were damaged, destroyed or stolen, Diedrich reported.
The department also recommended that students have copies of the correct health-insurance cards and information if they are under their parents' plans. Students should understand their coverage so that they know what they need to do before making a doctor's appointment on or near campus.
Fauss-Johnson said she was up-to-date about all of her health-insurance information but that she may need to discuss renter's insurance with her parents.
"I at least want to check it out," she said.
