The ABCs Of Studying Success

»  Comments | Post a Comment

CENTRAL OHIO -- The kids are heading back to class, and class means homework, right?

Did you know there is a right way and a wrong way to do homework?

NBC 4's Mikaela Hunt gets to the bottom of every student's afterschool pastime and how parents can ensure success.

BOTTOMLINE: Parents are checking off school-supply lists but also should be concerned with how their children study.

Hunt found the ABCs of going back to school should include a very basic lesson: How to correctly study. It could be the key to your student's classroom and life success.

They leave the lockers and lunchroom behind, but some local experts said children don't know how to do their homework.

For some students, it's a quiet desk in their room without a lot of distractions. Other students need to know someone's monitoring them so working at a kitchen table or dining room table is preferable, said Nisey Sebak, executive director of Sylvan Learning Center.

Your child's homework environment should be adjusted to his or her learning style. For example, visual learners shouldn't complete homework near a television. Also, he or she should not use a laptop that's full of desktop icons.

A verbal learner needs something going on in the background. If it's too quiet, that's distracting. He or she will need music in the background or white noise.

The bodily learner is another common type. It’s OK for him or her to sit cross-legged at a coffee table or incorporate physical stuff into study habits.

When he or she is reading a long chapter, a stress ball could come in handy because it incorporates physical movement.
