COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A Columbus family was awakened when two men invaded their home overnight Thursday.
NBC 4's Tom Brockman reported from the scene.
The incident occurred on the city’s North Side on Azelda Street around 2:30 a.m. Thursday.
According to Columbus Police, two men broke through the front door of the home as the Fields family of four was sleeping inside.
Josh Fields said it was a rude awakening, and that's putting it lightly.
Two suspects kicked in the dead-bolted front door in an apparent home invasion.
"This guy was in my room, had a gun to me, and told me to get up," Josh said.
The family said the men were armed with handguns.
When, Josh's sister Cassie came up from her room in the basement, the hooded suspects yelled for her to get on the floor, she instead ran back downstairs.
"I hit the third step, and I heard two gun shots. I thought I lost my brother and my dad," Cassie said.
The gunfire didn't come from the suspects, though. It came from her father, Ken Fields.
Ken said he sneaked into a hallway, grabbed a gun and shot at the suspects.
"I was able to get to my mother's gun," Ken said. "We keep it centralized in the hallway, and I jump back with it, and I said, 'Josh, get out of the way.' "
The confrontation lasted only seconds, Brockman reported.
Ken said he was aiming his firearm at the suspects when they turned around and told him to throw the weapon down. Ken wasn't having any of that.
The suspect began to back up, but Ken didn't let up.
Ken told the men to get out of the house. They backed up, Ken, said. As the first one got through the door, Ken said he fired a shot at him.
Ken said he fired two shots. There was a bullet hole in a front window, but a second bullet hole was no where to be found. Ken said he hopes that meant he hit his target.
No one was injured from the incident currently, Brockman said.
Police continued to search for the two suspects.
