GRANVILLE, Ohio--An Ohio college has launched a fundraising program for a local school district that failed to pass its most recent levy. Denison University in Granville is donating basic school supplies like pencils and paper, along with games and medical supplies to 10 Newark elementary schools. Students, faculty and staff at the private liberal arts east of Columbus have raised about $1,200 and donated numerous supplies in the program that started after Thanksgiving.
Laurel Kennedy, director of Denison's John W. Alford Center for Service Learning, says it's a way for people in a comfortable educational environment to help a struggling district. Newark voters failed to approve a levy last month that would have raised $6 million a year.
