COLUMBUS, Ohio -- One area in Worthington the city says funding must be cut, crossing guards. Parents on the other hand believe it is critical to student safety.
The Worthington City Council has decided not to fund the guards for next year. The City Manager is in talks with the school district superintendent to see what other financial options there are to keep the guards on the street.
The city says it is committed to the safety of students. The cut comes just nine months after Hilliard School crossing guard Diana Sharp was killed saving the life of a second-grader who was crossing the street in front of his elementary school.
The city is still trying to fill a $200,000 budget gap and officials are still talking about possible solutions. The school district says they are unsure how resources will be juggled in order to pay the guards. Worthington, Hilliard and Grandview Heights are the only cities in our area that pays for crossing guards.
