CENTRAL OHIO -- Food banks are buying their own farms, turning to fishermen and finding other creative ways to meet soaring demand in the midst of a worsening recession. The nation's largest domestic hunger-relief organization is Feeding America, which used to be called Second Harvest. Officials say some of its distribution centers in Ohio, California and a few other states recently reported a 30 percent to 40 percent surge in demand for food compared with a year ago. But supply is not keeping pace.
To address rising demand, food banks and other non-profits are trying to build new alliances with farmers, fishermen and even schools, which organize canned-food drives. The food banks also have to work to maintain relationships with the supermarkets and other retailers that are their traditional base of support.
