Criminals Target Homes In Certain Neighborhoods

»  Comments | Post a Comment

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Shattered glass. Ransacked home. Stolen possessions.

You, your home and your family were the targets of a break-in. And you're not alone.

From upscale developments to struggling neighborhoods, no Columbus resident or home is safe from this invasive crime.

Certain areas are being targeted more than others, though.

NBC 4's Matt Alvarez pinpointed the most vulnerable areas and explained how to protect your home in this crime watch report.

Michael Coakley won't be having the happiest of holidays. He most likely will spend his Christmas behind bars, charged with a home burglary inside a gated community in Bexley.

Coakley kicked in two doors to gain entry into a home around 11:45 a.m. on a Sunday, according to police reports. Moments later, third-floor residents called 911.

This was one of the 63 burglary reports that have come into Bexley's police department in 2008. Compare that to 47 in 2007.

Someone recently broke into another Bexley-area victim's house. This one was near Capital University.

"They kicked it in. It's split but secured together right now," the victim said.

In that case, thieves stole thousands of dollars worth of rifles and pistols from an avid hunter.

According to Columbus police reports, Bexley was only a drop in the bucket.

In CPD's Precinct 13 -- an area that includes Frank Road, Parsons Avenue and the city's southern-most border -- had more than 2,600 burglaries reported during the last two years.

Precinct 18 -- the area near the north outer belt, Huntley Road and Morse Road -- had more than 2,400 burglary reports.
