COLUMBUS, Ohio -- One person was killed Tuesday evening in a crash that closed a local freeway for several hours.

The crash occurred on Interstate 70 westbound between James Road and Livingston Avenue at about 10:30 p.m., NBC 4 reported.

According to police, Shawn Coles was standing outside his vehicle along the right berm of the freeway when the crash occurred.

Officials said he was assessing damage to his vehicle from a single-car crash when a second car lost control, striking the rear of Coles' vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Michael McKinnon of Thorneville, was transported to Grant Medical Center in critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries.

Coles was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Police responded and the freeway was closed for several hours.

Alcohol is not a suspected factor in the crash.
