COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A woman remained in the hospital Saturday morning after being trapped inside her burning home overnight.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
It happened on the city's North Side around 1:30 a.m. Firefighters said the woman, who was home alone at the time of the fire, is lucky to be alive.
Neighbors called 911 and said they saw heavy smoke in the 200 block of East Hudson Street.
When firefighters arrived, they found Carol Lucas in the second-floor bedroom, unconscious.
Batt. Chief Doug Smith said fire investigators have determined that the apartment fire in the 200 block of East Hudson Street was accidental -- and was sparked by a discarded cigarette on or near a mattress in the second-floor bedroom.
Lucas’ son, Robert Lucas, said his mother is 71 or 72 years old.
There were smoke detectors in the home, but they were missing batteries.
The woman remained at OSU Medical Center where she is listed in critical but stable condition.
