CANTON, Ohio -- A county commissioner says inmates of the Stark County jail who receive milk just twice a week should get a daily serving instead.
The inmates have received milk just twice a week since Dec. 1. They are served a calcium-fortified drink similar to Hi-C on days when milk is not provided.
Stark County Commissioner Jane Vignos told other commissioners at a board meeting yesterday that the northeast Ohio county should be able to provide milk. She threatened to try to revoke the county's contract with the jail's food services provider if milk isn't provided daily.
The jail administrator says inmates get a 2,700-calorie meal with the nutrition they need in addition to the calcium-fortified substitute drink.
Chief Deputy Michael McDonald says it would cost about 14.5 cents more per meal or about $65,000 a year to provide milk every day.
