AKRON, Ohio -- Supporters of an inmate on Ohio's death row are sending Christmas cards seeking clemency to Gov. Ted Strickland.
The cards drawn by Brett X. Hartmann in his cell at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown include a drawing of a lighted candle next to a Bible verse on the birth of Jesus Christ and a message asking the governor to spare Hartmann's life.
The 34-year-old inmate is scheduled for execution April 7 for killing 46-year-old Winda Snipes of Akron in 1997. She was stabbed more than 130 times and her hands were amputated and never found.
Death penalty opponents plan to sent 1,000 of Hartmann's cards.
Strickland spokesman Keith Dailey says the governor and his staff review letters and petitions before clemency decisions are made.
