COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Central Ohioans should expect mostly cloudy skies and a rain-snow mix that will change into freezing rain in the afternoon and evening Tuesday.

Winter weather advisories are in effect for the NBC 4 viewing area.

Storm Team 4 Meteorologist Marshall McPeek is calling for mostly cloudy skies and a rain-snow mix that will change into freezing rain in the afternoon and evening. The high will be 37 degrees today.

Freezing rain and snow showers, ice accumulations of a quarter to half inch and a of low 34 degrees are in tonight's forecast.

There are winter weather advisories for today and tonight because we’re expecting some freezing rain and rain/snow mix. The roads may have icy patches, and sidewalks will become slippery. Travelers will find more snow showers the farther west they go. Conditions improve if you’re traveling east.

Overnight, as the temperatures fall, some of the rain and freezing rain will change to rain/snow mix and a few embedded snow showers. The freezing rain is the biggest issue because it will create another glaze of ice on roads, driveways and sidewalks. A warm front moves into the state on Wednesday and all the frozen precipitation changes to rain, the temps jump into the upper 40s and everything melts. Some downpours may drop .75” or even a full inch of rain during the day.

Some rain/snow mix is likely as a cold front plows through the region Wednesday night. Not expecting any accumulation of snow so a White Christmas isn’t very likely. Besides, any snow that does fall will melt quickly as Christmas Day temps rise to around 40.
