WILLOUGHBY, Ohio -- Police chiefs around Ohio say they're relieved gas prices have fallen so much in recent months, especially after record high prices strained department budgets over the summer.
But with 2008 gas prices ranging from $4 a gallon to the current $1.60 a gallon, local officials are wondering how much they should budget in 2009 to keep patrol cars on the road.
Willoughby Police Chief Conrad Straube says his department has gone $19,000 over its fuel budget this year. But he says there were worries in August and September that the department would end up doubling its budget.
Scott Hildenbrand, the chief deputy in the Geauga County Sheriff's Office, says the recent drop in prices has helped his department meet its original fuel budget.
