[dateline] -- College-bound students and their parents are up against a deadline. If you want to qualify for the most college aid you can receive, you need to fill out some paperwork by Friday.
Beverly McCarren's children are now pursuing their PhDs in California. But a few years ago, applying for federal aid frustrated her, NBC 4's Mikaela Hunt reported.
"Frustrating in the fact that we were starting a little late," McCarren said. "I realized that everyone I talked to -- all the other parents I talked to -- they didn't know this information either."
McCarren took matters into her hands, conducting research and writing her own book about it: Mom's Guide To Paying For College.
She has distributed her book to several area high schools at no cost.
But beyond the pages of her book, financial aid offices at any school can answer your questions.
Experts said the most-often asked question is if parents need to complete their tax return before completing their FAFSA -- and the answer is no.
There is a location on the form where parents can estimate their tax return.
But parents need to gather some information before filling out the form, including your Social Security number, driver's license number, the 2007 tax estimate or tax return, records of untaxed income and information on any assets.
