MARYSVILLE, Ohio -- One local school district canceled classes Monday, which was the day a new, less expensive transportation plan was set to start.
The superintendent said the bitter cold and any bus delays could have made for a miserable morning, NBC 4's Erin Tate reported.
"You have to cross a main highway, and there's no sidewalk," Becky Turk said.
Turk said her kids' walk to school would be too dangerous now that the Marysville School District has reduced bus stops and reconfigured routes. She'll be driving them to class.
"That's a big inconvenience for us," she said.
Starting this week, Marysville students within a 2-mile radius of their schools will no longer get a free ride.
In the 148-square-mile area, 800 children will be affected by the bus changes.

"We'll do as best we can given there's five fewer buses on the road," Superintendent Larry Zimmerman said.
It's all part of balancing the budget and saving $3 million in five years, Tate reported.
Staff will be slashed, pay-to-participate and lunch costs will be increased and building temperatures modified -- all to cut costs.
Plus, parents meet at 7 p.m. at Marysville High to learn what classes may be cut and why the two levies that failed last year are back again.
"There has to be some way else to get the money," Bobby Wilkerson said.
