Suspect In Teen's Rape Surrenders

»  Comments | Post a Comment

[dateline] -- A man suspected of raping a teenage girl and posing as a police officer has surrendered.

Charles W. Williams, 38, turned himself in Tuesday evening and is in custody at the Franklin County Jail. Williams has been charged with one count each of kidnapping and rape -- and it's not his first offense, NBC 4's Erin Tate reported.

Police said Williams was sitting in his car on Friday at an apartment complex when he saw a 14-year-old girl having an argument with her mom and step-father.

According to investigators, the girl stormed off, and Williams approached her parents, convincing them he was an undercover police officer. He allegedly offered to pick up the girl and bring her home.

Police said the girl's parents consented, but had no idea what was about to happen.

When Williams found the girl nearby, police said, he also tricked her. But she didn't get into his car without first asking questions.

"She asked to see his badge. He said, 'You don't need to. I showed your mom,'" said an unidentified Columbus police detective.

Columbus police said Williams then took the girl to the Columbus Motor Lodge in Whitehall and raped her. He finally brought her home at 5 a.m.

Motel management said Williams rented a room on Friday night and that police searched the room on Sunday. Officials said police weren't able to find much in the room because it had already been cleaned.

Police tracked down Williams' car on Tuesday, but said Williams is still on the run, armed and dangerous.

In 1994, Williams was convicted of gross sexual imposition against a 15-year-old girl. According to the adult parole authority, Williams' previous victim was also walking down the street when he forced her into his car, took her home and sexually assaulted her.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 614-645-4701.

Columbus police said if you're approached by someone you think might be impersonating an officer, ask to see a badge and identification.

All officers are required to carry both. If you still have doubts, call police.
