[dateline] -- Much of Central Ohio saw a white New Year when several inches of snow started falling late last night.
Storm Team 4 meteorologist Bob Nunnally said the cold will continue today. The skies will remain cloudy and the winds frigid. Most of Central Ohio is pretty dry as far as new snow is concerned. Expect just a few flurries throughout the afternoon and a very cold night.
Storm Team 4 reporter Tacoma Newsome found that thanks to crews’ diligence, drivers said Columbus road conditions weren’t as bad as they could have been.
City officials said they called their night crew early last night, and ODOT was prepared as well.
Because of the cold temperatures, city and ODOT officials said crews currently are concentrating on salting cleared streets and gearing up for more snow, Newsome reported.
Storm Team 4 reporter Mike Bowersock reported on current conditions from snow-covered areas south of Columbus.
South Bloomfield, in Pickaway County, received maybe an inch of snow, and U.S. Route 23 looked clear this afternoon, Bowersock reported.
But, he said, a few miles can make all of the difference.
Snow still was falling in Chillicothe late this morning, but authorities said there weren’t any serious problems or major accidents.
In Fairfield County, wind was blowing snow across the east-west highways such as U.S. 22 near Amanda.
Lancaster residents found a blanket of snow this morning and day with no school for students in the city district, Bowersock reported.
Storm Team 4 reported that things look much the same north of Columbus. Streets in Delaware and Waldo were covered with a thick layer of snow. Conditions were slick this morning but are improving.
