COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A Columbus Firefighter is in hot water after Columbus Police said he tried to get back at a man he thinks burglarized his father’s home.
Andrew Conti is now facing kidnapping charges, NBC 4’s Tacoma Newsome reported.
Fire and police have confirmed that Firefighter Andrew J. Conti was arrested Sunday.
We know Firefighter Conti was arrested but aren’t not sure what the charges are, said Battalion Chief David Whiting.
But an arrest warrant, obtained by NBC 4, tells a more involved story.
Conti, a 14-year veteran of the Columbus Fire Department, is charged with kidnapping, according to police documents.
Conti allegedly held a man against his will, according to the Columbus Police report.
Once the victim was in Conti's custody, he handcuffed, maced and hit the victim several times with a ball bat, the warrant said.
What the document does not reveal is why Conti would allegedly do this to another individual.
But police officials told NBC 4 that Conti believed the victim, 44-year-old David Stropki, was involved in the burglary of his father's home.
Conti was arraigned and posted bond.
Newsome went to Conti’s home to get his side of the story; a woman came to the door but would not open it.
Conti will be taken off the streets and put behind a desk until the police complete an investigation, Newsome reported.
"He'll have to go through the investigation of our professional standards,” Whiting said.
