Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The nation celebrated the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Monday, and Columbus and its surrounding suburbs planned and carried out a number of celebratory events planned.


The events began early Monday morning with the 23rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. It's the largest and longest-running sit-down celebratory breakfast in the country.


The U.S. Postal Service issued its latest stamp in its coveted Black Heritage Series as well. This year's honoree is pioneering author Charles W. Chesnutt.


Westerville saluted Dr. King during its third annual breakfast celebration with entertainment, guest speakers and video reflections.


Dublin’s commemoration event was held at Dublin Jerome High School, and NBC 4’s Mike Bowersock was the event emcee.


A dramatic portrayal of the life of Sojourner Truth highlighted Worthington's annual community celebration.


The King Arts Complex’s “Remembering Martin” program and Open House continued through the afternoon.


NBC 4 sponsors the event, which was hosted by news anchors Mike Jackson and Anietra Hamper and meteorologists Bob Nunnally and Jym Ganahl.


“Remembering Martin” offered many cultural activities that commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.


“They have great entertainment on the stage all day long,” Storm Team 4’s Bob Nunnally said.


“This is an opportunity to take advantage of so many of the wonderful exhibits here at The King Arts Complex,” said NBC 4’s Mike Jackson.


“This is a time of renewal, recommitment to the dream of Dr. King that we should be living not just one day of the year but year day of the year,” Mayor Mike Coleman said. “The idea and the belief that all of us are created equal … that’s what it’s all about.”


To cap off the day, the citywide Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative March took off from City Hall at 4:45 p.m. Attendees were invited to a free post-march program at the memorial at 6 p.m. The march was emceed by NBC 4’s Mike Jackson.
