CENTRAL OHIO -- It was a rough start for thousands of commuters after a number of accidents around Central Ohio.
There wasn’t any snow on the roads, but there were some dangerous and deadly accidents during rush hour, NBC 4’s Tacoma Newsome reported.
The first accident happened in the northbound lane of Interstate 71, south of State Route 61, in Marengo.
Semi-Truck Driver Joseph Isacovici pulled onto the berm to update his computer, according to police. Minutes later, the driver of a minivan slammed into the back of the semi.
Don Wilson of Sunbury, 30, was killed. He was driving a Chevy minivan. The 25-year-old semi driver was not hurt, Newsome reported.
State troopers are investigating what caused the driver to hit the semi. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
While the scene was being cleared, only one lane of northbound traffic was open.
Columbus Police believe it was a series of accidents that shut down Interstate 270 on the north side just after 8 a.m. It was three separate accidents, involving two cars each, that shut down westbound lanes, Newsome reported.
Traffic was backed up for miles as police tried to clear the accident. Most lanes were closed for about an hour.
One person was transported to OSU Medical Center. His or her condition is not known.
They said the accidents most likely were due to black ice, Newsome reported.
