Parents Look For Answers From School District

»  Comments | Post a Comment

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Parents are now looking for answers from their children's school district and some homeowners are looking to see if Columbus City Schools will ask for a tax hike.

The superintendent and her administration held an open forum on Monday night to talk about school levies -- and the cafeteria was so crowded that some didn't get a chance to speak, NBC 4's Ana Jackson reported.

There were many different fields of questions, concerning everything from school lunches to new buildings. Luckily for those parents who didn't get a chance to speak, there will be more meetings.

The challenge is all about balance for Chandris Ross, who is balancing schoolwork, choir rehearsal and being a freshman at Centennial High School.

"It's a new experience for me, being a freshman and there's a whole bunch of friendly people," Ross said.

For a mother, the concern is finding a balance with parent involvement.

"I wanted to know how to interact with the teachers and not make them feel like they were in trouble," said Sheila Eubanks, a mother.

Eubanks expressed her concerns to school representatives.

"When I came here, I felt like I was met with resistance," Eubanks said. "I've even e-mailed a board member about programs for parents only to not get a response."

There were many questions about class schedules, uniforms and the use of old buildings.

"Academic programming is our top priority. How we can get there and the buildings and everything are just another question," said Dr. Gene Harris, superintendent.

Eubanks said she did receive some answers, but there's a long road ahead for the district.

The next meeting will be held on Feb. 4 at Champion Middle School on North 22nd Avenue.

Two other meetings will be held on Feb. 11 at Wedgewood Middle School on Briggs Road and on Feb. 13 at Marion-Franklin High School on Koebel Road.
