Leaving your wallet in your car or leaving your purse unattended at work, there careless acts can put your money and identity at risk.
The Grove City Police Department has received 22 reports of stolen wallets containing credit cards.
Grove City resident Roger Patrick had his credit card stolen and used after leaving it in an ATM.
He tells NBC4, video surveillance shows the suspect walking up to the machine just seconds after he left.
"They went and used the card made several large purchases like 50 dollars in gasoline, 80 dollars in the grocery store, car wash and cigarettes you name it,” explained Patrick.
A former detective from West Virginia, Patrick admits he made a bad move. He says it is easy to become a victim of such a crime if you aren’t thinking ahead and taking the necessary precautions.
"Anybody who is doing some shopping, especially women, they need to watch out, keep their purses on hand.”
Other ways to keep from becoming a victim include always locking your car and rolling up the windows. Stow your purse or wallet out of sight, locked in the trunk. And keep a list of your credit cards and their phone numbers to help you quickly cancel it before someone uses it.
