CLEVELAND -- Coal that one Ohio man considered trash has been treasured by those who responded quickly to an online ad offering the fuel for free.
The catch was they had to haul it out of Steve Hronek's basement in Cleveland Heights. The knee-high pile of anthracite coal was down there in 1997 when Hronek bought the 90-year-old house, which once heated with coal. Some of the chunks were as large as a milk jug.
One local dealer says the type of coal sells for $220 or more per ton, but Hronek didn't care about the money and just wanted his basement cleared. So, he posted his online classified ad last Monday.
Responses started coming within 15 minutes and continued for two days. The takers have been showing up with trucks, and Hronek says all the coal is spoken for.
