AKRON, Ohio -- Some University of Akron parents are complaining about a new meal plan fee that charges students up to $450 for meals eaten off campus.
Wally McGilvray of the Cleveland suburb of Brooklyn Heights says her family is "whipped," tired and worn out trying to afford tuition for her son Clifton, so the fee is upsetting.
The university says the administrative fee helps cover electricity and employees' wages and training. The only way for students to completely avoid paying it is to eat on campus for every meal and take advantage of a 25 percent discount from the menu price.
Other schools have similar fees, though they're less conspicuous. Ohio State University spokeswoman Ruth Gerstner says most places make meal plan charges for power and worker pay invisible.
