COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Better Business Bureau is warning about letters that appear to come from Publishers Clearing House telling the recipients they've won a $1 million prize.
It's a scam. The consumer watchdog group said Wednesday that the letters come with fraudulent checks for as much as $5,900, and the goal is to con victims into cashing the checks and wiring most of the amount back to the sender. That money cannot be recovered.
Spokeswoman Joan Coughlin with the Central Ohio Better Business Bureau in Columbus says the scammers are trying to capitalize on a New Jersey woman's recent big-money win in the real Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes.
The bureau says people have reported receiving the letters since early March in 19 states, including Ohio.
